Defensive Backs Coach

James Stanley was named Defensive Backs Coach of the Tiger-Cats on February 5, 2013. In four seasons with the Tiger-Cats, Stanley has coached three defensive backs to CFL All-Star status, including Delvin Breaux in 2014, and Emanuel Davis and Craig Butler in 2015.

The Tiger-Cats led the CFL in interceptions (tie-26) in 2015, and the team’s six interception return touchdowns, all but one by Stanley’s group of defensive backs, was just one shy of the CFL record set by the Toronto Argonauts in 2006. Davis led the league with three interception return touchdowns (no other player had more than one) and was named the Shaw CFL Top Performer in Week 7 after returning two interceptions for touchdowns against Winnipeg. Davis also became the first-ever Tiger-Cat, and first player in the CFL since Byron Parker in September 2004, to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game.

Prior to his arrival in Hamilton, Stanley helped the Toronto Argonauts capture the 100th Grey Cup Championship as Linebackers Coach in 2012. He began his CFL coaching career as a defensive assistant with the Calgary Stampeders in 2011, focusing on the team’s secondary.

In 2010, Stanley was a Special Teams Quality Control and Defensive Assistant Coach with the United Football League’s Hartford Colonials, while later serving as a defensive coaching intern with the Cleveland Browns of the NFL.  He also spent part of the 2009 season as a special teams and secondary intern coach with the NFL’s Detroit Lions.

In addition to his pro experience, Stanley spent three years as Defensive Backs Coach for the University of Dayton where he coached four All-Conference defensive backs.

As a player, Stanley suited up for four seasons at the University of Toledo, earning trips to two bowl games. Upon graduation in 2002, Stanley served as a spring graduate assistant for his alma mater.

The native of Jackson, Michigan also played four seasons of professional indoor football (2004-07) with various teams in the AFL, AF2, AIFL and NIFL, and was selected with the first overall pick in the Atlantic Indoor Football League draft in 2005.
