Last weekend, the Second Annual Up Front Offensive Line Development camp took place at the home of the Tiger-Cats training camp, McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium.
The field was filled with over 200 participants, which included approximately 150 athletes, 30 coaches and 30 other highly qualified instructors. Several Ticats alumni were among the coaches on hand, including Mike Derks, Ryan Donnelly, Brian Hutchings, Lee Knight, John Malinosky, John Salavantis, Dale Sanderson, Ralph Scholz, Ed Szpytma, Jason Riley and Mark Verbeek.
After two intense on-field sessions in the morning focused on pass-blocking and run-blocking skills, the athletes entered the classroom for lessons on nutrition and supplements, position-specific training as well as a seminar on setting goals to become successful from former Ticats offensive line coach and current AM 900 CHML colour commentator John Salavantis. The athletes also head from Ticats alumni Brian Hutchings, currently the Niagara Region Commissioner of Community Services, with a $350 million portfolio, spoke on how playing offensive line has benefited him in life and in his career.
Proceeds from the camp went to McMaster’s Adopt-an-Athlete Program.
