TIGER-CATS SIGN TWO WIDE RECEIVERS, INCLUDING OLYMPIC SPRINTER HAYNES

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Wednesday that the football club has signed national free agent wide receiver and former Canadian Olympic sprinter Akeem Haynes, as well as international free agent wide receiver Jamal Robinson.

Haynes, 25, served as the lead-off runner and helped Canada break a 20-year-old national record to win a bronze medal in the 4×100 metre relay at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He ran a personal best 10.15 seconds in the 100 metre at the 2015 Canadian Championships and finished third in the event the following year in 2016. Prior to his international success, Haynes earned a track scholarship at the University of Alabama and was named a First Team All-American in 2013 after helping the Crimson Tide’s 4×100 metre relay team finish second at the NCAA Championships in school record time.

Born in Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica, but raised in Calgary, Alberta, the 5-6, 160-pound Haynes played quarterback, running back and kick returner in high school before embarking on his track career.

Robinson, 25, served the final month of the 2017 season on the Tiger-Cats practice roster after spending parts of two seasons (2016-17) with the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars. Prior to turning pro, the 6-4, 205-pound wide receiver spent five years at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In 52 career collegiate games with the Ragin’ Cajuns, the native of Slidell, Louisiana, recorded 156 receptions for 2,653 yards and 20 touchdowns.
